Hundreds of bikes from all over central Vermont were gathered in the parking lot across East State Street from the ORO store on Saturday, May 10, for the annual Onion River Outdoors Bike Swap. At 9 a.m., a crowd of bicycle-seekers flooded in, ready to find their new wheels for the upcoming season. Mountain bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes, kids’ bikes, adults’ bikes – you name it, they had it. The colorful array of bicycles on display set the scene for a vibrant spring ritual as new owners rode or rolled them out from under the Onion River awnings.

Cassidy Jay and her daughter, Ella Seymour, found themselves pondering a tough choice: the pink bike or the purple one? The annual bike swap organized by Onion River Sports offered a wide selection of bicycles for sale in the parking lot across East State from the City Center store on that sunny Saturday. It was a bustling event, with shoppers perusing the bikes and making decisions on which one would be their new ride for the season. As the day went on, more and more people left the swap with a new (to them) bike, ready to hit the streets or trails.

Not really sure why this matters, but it seems like the annual Onion River Outdoors bike swap is a big deal for the biking community in central Vermont. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like events like this bring people together and create a sense of excitement for the upcoming biking season. The sight of all those bikes in one place, waiting to find new homes, is quite a spectacle. And hey, who doesn’t love a good bike swap, right?
