Fred A. Curran, who sadly passed away on May 9, 2025, was known for his warmth, sociability, and love of birding and gadgets. He was a longtime administrator at the University of Vermont, where he worked for over 30 years. Fred’s beloved wife, Ann, passed away in 2022, leaving a void in his life that he often spoke about in his final days.
Fred and Ann met while attending college in Rochester, N.Y., and soon after getting married, they settled in Burlington, Vt. Fred’s career at UVM was distinguished, with him serving as the director of institutional research and later as an assistant provost. He was considered a go-to resource for any statistical information about UVM or the broader American education system.
Aside from his professional achievements, Fred had a wide range of interests, including a passion for birdwatching, traveling, and cooking. He and Ann would often explore different parts of the world in search of unique bird species. Fred was also a fan of opera, fine dining, and sports, particularly UVM athletics. His love for life and his ability to connect with others made him a cherished figure in the community.
As a man who touched the lives of many, Fred will be dearly missed by his friends, family, and colleagues. His legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew him. In memory of Fred, donations to Habitat for Humanity or HomeShare Vermont are encouraged to honor his commitment to helping others. A celebration of his life will be held in the summer, bringing together those who were lucky enough to have known him.
