Collaborative Efforts to Tackle Vermont’s Affordability Crisis
Amy Spear, president of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, and Megan Sullivan, vice president of government affairs for the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, have joined forces to address the pressing issue of affordability in Vermont. As Vermonters continue to face rising costs and economic challenges, the Vermont Chamber of Commerce is taking proactive steps to create a more sustainable and affordable future for all.
Challenges Facing Vermont
Affordability remains a top concern for Vermonters, as rising costs in education, housing, and healthcare continue to strain families and businesses across the state. According to data from the Vermont Futures Project, the state must add an average of 13,500 people to its workforce annually through 2035 to sustain economic growth amidst demographic shifts. Additionally, meeting the current housing demand will require a significant increase in housing output, with 36,000 new units needed by 2029.
Addressing Root Causes
While Vermont ranks as the third-highest state in the nation for tax collections per capita, simply implementing Band-Aid solutions will not suffice. The Vermont Chamber of Commerce emphasizes the importance of tackling the root causes of affordability challenges, rather than just treating the symptoms. Last year’s success in modernizing Act 250 showcased how collaboration and compromise can lead to meaningful progress, even in the face of challenges.
A Call for Collaboration
Moving forward, the Vermont Chamber of Commerce urges all stakeholders, including legislators, businesses, and individuals, to engage in honest conversations and embrace compromise to drive meaningful change. By prioritizing cooperation and shared responsibility, Vermont can create a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach to problem-solving. The Vermont Chamber is committed to advocating for data-driven policies that reduce costs, stimulate economic growth, and create opportunities for all Vermonters.
Looking Towards the Future
As Vermont enters a new legislative session, the Vermont Chamber calls on leaders to stay engaged in discussions, focus on results, and move beyond rhetoric to address the affordability crisis. By working together, Vermont can ensure a vibrant economy, livable communities, and a bright future for all residents. It is time to set aside blame and partisanship in favor of open-minded dialogue and creative solutions that improve the lives of all Vermonters. Together, we can build a stronger and more affordable future for businesses and communities across the state.
