Renowned Educator and Faith-Filled Community Member, Sister Janet Rock, Passes Away at 97

On February 17, 2025, the world lost a remarkable soul with the passing of Sister Janet Rock, known as Sr. Mary Anthony to many. A vibrant member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Sister Janet’s legacy spans decades of service and dedication to education and community care. Born on October 19, 1927, in Burlington, Vt., to Nancy and Arthur Rock Sr., Sister Janet’s impact on those around her was profound and lasting.

A Life Devoted to Education and Service

Sister Janet’s journey began when she joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1945, later professing her vows in 1948. Over the course of more than 30 years, she devoted her talents to teaching in various elementary schools across the Diocese of Burlington. From Cathedral Grammar to Mount St. Mary’s, Sister Janet’s passion for education shone through, touching the lives of countless students and colleagues.

In 1969, Sister Janet transitioned to Mater Christi School, where she not only taught but also served as assistant principal from 1977 to 1995. Her commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering a love of learning was evident in every aspect of her work. Even after retiring from teaching in 1995, Sister Janet continued her service as the facilities manager of Mount St. Mary Convent until 2005.

A Beacon of Light in the Community

Beyond her professional endeavors, Sister Janet remained an active and engaged member of her community. She approached life with unwavering faith, always ready to lend a helping hand and offer support to those in need. Her presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to her fellow sisters, employees, and friends.

Sister Janet’s love for life extended beyond her work, as she found joy in simple pleasures like cheering for her favorite sports teams – the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics, the New York Giants, and the Mater Christi basketball teams. Her annual traditions, from organizing Super Bowl parties to trips to Fenway Park and Watch Hill, R.I., added a touch of excitement to her routine.

In her passing, Sister Janet leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her faith and community. She is survived by her sister, Pauline Adams, and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and sisters in religion. The outpouring of love and support from the community is a testament to the impact she had on those around her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on February 28, 2025, at the Sacred Heart Chapel at Mater Christi School in Burlington, Vt. Visiting hours will precede the service, allowing friends and loved ones to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Sisters of Mercy to support their ongoing ministerial works.
