A Vermont firm recalled more than 1,700 pounds of butter contaminated with coliform, a type of bacteria found in fecal matter. Agri-Mark Inc., based in Waitsfield, Vermont, recalled 189 cases of Cabot Creamery 8-ounce premium butter made with sea salt, distributed in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. The recall was issued on March 26, 2025, and is ongoing at the lowest level of Class III, which means it won’t really hurt people’s health. Consumers shouldn’t eat or use the recalled butter, with a best-by date of September 9, identified as lot 090925-055, item 2038. Agri-Mark officials stated that the company recovered 99.5% of the questionable lot before selling it to customers, but 17 packages were sold in Vermont. Coliform bacteria are found in warm-blooded animals’ feces and in the environment. Not really sure why this matters, but the bacteria may not cause sickness but could signal the presence of disease-causing germs. Agri-Mark officials claimed they’ve taken the necessary internal actions to address the cause.
