This competitive program offers up to three years of study at one of the most esteemed universities globally, marking the first time in nearly two decades that a Vermont resident has received this honor.
An Advocate for Animal Welfare with a Unique Perspective
Currently a senior at Harvard University, Ashooh has crafted a specialized course of study focusing on animal welfare, with plans to delve into graduate research in law and philosophy. Her passion lies in exploring the conditions of animals across various environments, including farms, laboratories, and the wild. Through her research, Ashooh aims to challenge existing notions of individual worthiness of protection and highlight the importance of improving treatment for animals.
A Personal Journey Rooted in Compassion
Growing up, Ashooh’s deep connection to animals was nurtured by her mother’s love for all creatures and her involvement in 4-H, showcasing dairy cows during summer fairs. Reflecting on her childhood, Ashooh shared, “There was no other kind of reality when I was very young other than that animals are just other kinds of people.” This unique perspective has guided her academic pursuits and hands-on experiences, from studying macaque monkeys in Puerto Rico to working closely with African grey parrots in Massachusetts.
Elevating the Discourse on Animal Welfare
Ashooh, at 21 years old, aspires to use the platform provided by the Rhodes Scholarship to raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare studies. She believes that there is a wealth of untapped scholarship focusing on better treatment for both humans and animals, emphasizing the need for academic institutions to prioritize these critical issues.
As Lena Ashooh embarks on this transformative journey to Oxford University, her dedication to advocating for animal welfare and challenging societal norms is poised to make a lasting impact on the field. Through her innovative research and unwavering commitment, she is paving the way for a more compassionate and inclusive future for all beings.
