Revitalizing Rupert Village: Town and Nonprofit Collaborate for Town Green Revamp
Rupert, a small town in the northwest corner of Bennington County, has seen a remarkable transformation in recent years thanks to a collaborative effort between the town and a nonprofit organization. The Rupert Village Trust, dedicated to historic preservation and community development, has worked alongside local residents to revamp Rupert’s town green, turning it into a vibrant community hub filled with activities and events for all to enjoy.
The Birth of a Tradition
At a recent winter solstice event, around 30 people gathered on the town green to sip hot chocolate, roast chestnuts, and enjoy the warm glow of handmade luminaries lining the snow-covered landscape. This tradition, now in its fourth year, began during the Covid-19 pandemic as a way to safely bring the community together through outdoor programming. Jed Rubin, a Rupert resident and board member of the Rupert Village Trust, described the event as a heartwarming experience where families gathered around the fire pit to make s’mores and celebrate the season.
A Community Effort
The revitalization of Rupert’s town green has been a labor of love for both residents and local officials. With a population of around 700, Rupert is known for its rural charm and welcoming atmosphere. Janet Hurley, assistant director of the Bennington Regional Planning Commission, praised the town green as a gathering place that attracts people from near and far, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Building for the Future
The town green project has seen significant milestones, from the purchase of land for conservation to the creation of new community spaces. Thanks to funding from the state’s Municipal Technical Assistance Program and annual contributions from Rupert’s residents, the town green committee has been able to develop essential amenities like a parking lot, picnic tables, and accessible pathways. Looking ahead, plans are in place to build a pavilion, play structure, and lush landscaping to further enhance the green’s appeal.
As the project continues to unfold, the town of Rupert is poised to become a model for community-driven development, showcasing the power of collaboration and civic engagement in creating vibrant public spaces. Residents and visitors alike can look forward to enjoying a welcoming town green that promises to be a source of joy and connection for years to come.
