Laurel’s life was defined by her commitment to her family and community. After marrying Alton “Ken” Ashley in 1956, Laurel embarked on a journey that would see her wear many hats—from a devoted wife and mother to a beloved member of the Essex Elementary School family.
Following her marriage to Ken, Laurel worked for the state Department of Health before moving to Virginia to be with her husband, who was stationed at Fort Belvoir. Her time in Virginia saw her working for Routh Robbins Real Estate, showcasing her adaptability and work ethic. However, her heart remained in Vermont, and she returned to Burlington to welcome her first child into the world.
In 1967, Laurel’s career in education began when she joined the staff at Essex Elementary School, where she would spend the next 22 years. Her dedication to the students, parents, and faculty of both Essex Elementary and Founders Memorial left an indelible mark on the school community. Laurel’s warm smile, kind words, and unwavering support endeared her to all who crossed her path.
