Born on November 21, 1942, in Lynn, Mass., Jackie’s journey was one of unwavering dedication to compassion and care, leaving a lasting impact on all those she encountered.

A Legacy of Service

From her humble beginnings in Saugus and Swampscott, Mass., Jackie’s passion for nursing blossomed as she graduated from New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1963. This marked the beginning of a nearly 40-year career characterized by selflessness and empathy. Her diverse nursing experiences in med-surg, emergency rooms, and mental health settings paved the way for her transformative work in eldercare.

The Visionary Behind McClure Miller Respite House

Jackie’s visionary spirit came to fruition during her tenure as the director of nursing at the McGirr Nursing Home in Bellows Falls, Vt. Recognizing the need for specialized care, she co-founded Vermont Respite House, now known as McClure Miller Respite House, alongside Terje Anderson. Through tireless dedication, she established a haven where individuals in their final stages of life could find comfort and dignity. Jackie’s legacy lives on through the enduring standards she set for compassionate end-of-life care.

A Life Well-Lived

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jackie’s impact extended into the spiritual realm as an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church. Her service at various congregations across Vermont exemplified her unwavering commitment to faith and community. Jackie’s love for gardening and nature further showcased her nurturing spirit, touching the lives of many through her shared passion.

In her memory, Jackie leaves behind a loving family, including her husband of 60 years, Allan, daughters Jennifer Arbuckle and Lesley Higgins, son-in-law John Higgins, and granddaughter Wylie. Their loss is deeply felt, but Jackie’s legacy of kindness and service will forever inspire those who knew her.
