Remembering Vermonters: An Opinion Piece by Scott Beck

This commentary is by Scott Beck of St. Johnsbury. He is the Caledonia District state-senator-elect and the incoming Senate Republican minority leader. He previously served 10 years in the Vermont House of Representatives.

In the aftermath of the November election, Vermonters are more engaged than ever. The pressing issues of education property taxes, housing affordability, healthcare costs, public safety, and the Clean Heat Standard continue to loom large. The urgency to address these problems reflects the frustration and desperation many Vermonters are feeling. Families are struggling to stay afloat, and even those who were once comfortable are questioning their future in Vermont.

Legislators will be sworn in on Jan. 8, and the work ahead is daunting. While the supermajority has come to an end, it is not a solution to the systemic issues plaguing Vermont. The upcoming budget proposals and revenue forecasts will provide some guidance, but true change will require a concerted effort from lawmakers.

Challenging the Status Quo

One of the biggest obstacles to enacting systemic change is the influence of special interest groups. These organizations have pushed for policies that benefit themselves at the expense of Vermonters. It is crucial for constituents to hold their legislators accountable and demand reforms that prioritize affordability and public safety.

Lessons Learned

The events of November 5th served as a wake-up call for many legislators. It reinforced the importance of representing the interests of the people and not succumbing to outside pressures. Lawmakers must be mindful of their voting records and ensure that their actions align with the needs of Vermonters.

Moving Forward

As we reflect on the outcomes of the election, it is clear that the voices of Vermonters must be heard and heeded. The road ahead will be challenging, but with continued engagement and advocacy, we can strive to create a more equitable and prosperous future for all residents of Vermont. Let us remember the lessons of the past and work together towards a brighter tomorrow.
