Noah Kahan Ghosts: How a Music Editor Gets Creative | Seven Days
It was a simple affair back in 2022 when I interviewed Vermont singer-songwriter Noah Kahan as he released his album Stick Season. But fast forward to 2023, and Kahan’s skyrocketing success meant landing an interview had become a challenge. His management made it clear – Kahan wasn’t available until later in the year after his tour.
As Kahan’s songs became omnipresent, haunting me at every turn, my editors at Seven Days were determined to crack the story. They proposed a daring plan – write the cover story about Kahan without Kahan himself. It was a unique reporting challenge, but I dove in headfirst.
Writing into the Hole
I spoke to Kahan’s high school soccer coach, music therapists, die-hard fans, venue owners, DJs, and more to piece together a portrait of the rising star. It was like painting with the negative space, using others’ stories to illuminate Kahan’s journey from a different angle.
Embracing the Void
As I delved into the testimonies, I realized the story wasn’t just about Kahan but the impact of his success on Vermont. Fans found solace in his music, connecting deeply with his struggles and triumphs. The void left by Kahan’s absence in the story actually highlighted the profound connection he had forged with his audience.
