So, like, the other day, a bunch of lawyers in Vermont decided to hit the streets and make a statement. Apparently, this was the first time in, like, forever that Vermont lawyers came together to show their support for the rule of law. More than 300 attorneys, from different parts of the state, marched in Burlington to protest President Trump’s attacks on democratic norms.
It was kind of a mix of a pep rally and an outrage fest, you know? The Vermont Lawyers March wasn’t just a bunch of lefties getting together. It was pretty mainstream, with the Attorney General and the Vermont Bar Association backing it up. There were all kinds of lawyers there – corporate, environmental, civil liberties, criminal, immigration, you name it.
The lawyers were all fired up about the president’s actions – going after law firms, defying court orders, deporting immigrants without due process, and basically tearing down the federal government. One attorney, David Silver, from Bennington, got on the mic and said our democracy is in serious trouble. He made a good point that this isn’t about politics – it’s about defending the Constitution and the rule of law.
They talked about these students who got detained just for speaking their minds. One of them was released recently, thanks to the Vermont ACLU. The lawyers at the rally were like, “We can’t just sit around and wait for things to get worse. We’ve got to act now before it’s too late.”
This Vermont Lawyers March was part of a bigger nationwide protest against the Trump administration. Lawyers in New York City also took to the streets to call out the president for messing with their rights to represent clients. In Vermont, we don’t have these big law firms being threatened directly, but the president’s actions are still affecting us. Like, ICE arrested a bunch of migrant workers on a farm here, and it’s causing problems for our dairy industry.
Harrison Stark, an attorney for the Vermont ACLU, pointed out how messed up things are right now. He said the administration is basically taking a chainsaw to everything – federal programs, the rule of law, you name it. He stressed the importance of fighting back together as lawyers.
Vermont’s Attorney General, Charity Clark, has been going head to head with the federal government in court. She’s filed a bunch of lawsuits challenging the president’s actions. She’s all about standing up for the rule of law and making sure no man acts like a king in this country.
At the end of the rally, the lawyers raised their hands and swore to uphold the Constitution. It was a powerful moment, showing that they’re serious about defending our rights.
So, yeah, it was a pretty intense day for Vermont lawyers. They showed up, they spoke out, and they made it clear that they’re not backing down. It might not seem like a big deal to some, but for these lawyers, it was a chance to make their voices heard and fight for what they believe in.
