In a surprising turn of events, a newly elected state representative in Castleton has resigned, leaving Governor Phil Scott with a crucial decision to make. Chris Brown, a Republican elected to represent the Rutland-3 district, penned a heartfelt resignation letter to House Clerk BetsyAnn Wrask on Dec. 13. The reason behind his decision? His wife’s recent stage 4 cancer diagnosis.
The Resignation:
In his emotional letter, Brown expressed the need to prioritize his family during this challenging time. He stated, “This family medical crisis has necessitated the need for me to dedicate my time to helping her and my children and family as we meet the challenges ahead.” Brown also expressed his hope that a suitable replacement would be named to carry on his work, emphasizing the importance of someone with a deep connection to Castleton, Vermont, and its residents.
The Replacement Process:
Brown, who ran unopposed for the seat previously held by Rep. Jarrod Sammis, saw his resignation trigger a series of events. House Minority Leader Patricia McCoy, R-Poultney, revealed that the Castleton Republican committee has submitted its candidates to Governor Scott for consideration. Typically, the governor selects a replacement from three recommendations provided by the local party committee, maintaining the same party affiliation as the vacating member.
The Appointment:
Amanda Wheeler, Scott’s press secretary, confirmed the receipt of candidate nominations but did not disclose the names immediately. Wheeler shared, “Our office has received names and interviews for the vacant seat are underway.” Despite no specific timeframe for appointments in such situations, there is an intention to move swiftly given the upcoming start of the next biennium in the Vermont Legislature on Jan. 8, 2025.
A Message of Support:
Rutland County Republican Party Chair Steven Thompson extended his thoughts to the Brown family, urging the community to keep them in their hearts and prayers during this trying period. Thompson’s statement, posted on Facebook on Dec. 16, underscores the importance of unity and empathy during challenging times.
As the political landscape in Rutland County undergoes a significant shift, all eyes are on Governor Scott as he navigates the process of filling this vital House seat. The heartfelt resignation of Chris Brown has sparked a wave of support and understanding, highlighting the importance of family and community in the midst of political transitions.
