A Life of Purpose and Dedication
A true pioneer in the field of experiential public education, Joan directed the DUO (Do Unto Others) program at Champlain Valley Union High School from the late 1970s to the 1990s. This innovative program, which paired high school students with community mentors, allowed Joan to explore the transformative power of service-learning and hands-on experiences. Her work took her across the United States, where she became a respected leader in the field, connecting students with a diverse array of individuals and businesses in Chittenden County.
After earning a Masters of Education from the University of Vermont, Joan joined the Direction Center at CVU in 1978, where she dedicated herself to shaping the minds of young learners and instilling in them a sense of civic responsibility. Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom, as she served on the Charlotte School Board and later devoted her time to volunteer work at the Charlotte Senior Center.
A Beacon of Light in the Community
Joan’s impact extended far beyond the realm of education. A devoted member of The Cathedral Church of St. Paul’s in Burlington for over 50 years, she found solace and purpose in her faith, embodying the principles of compassion and service in all aspects of her life. Her love for the natural beauty of Vermont was evident in her daily activities, from tending to her garden to exploring the great outdoors through activities like skiing, biking, and kayaking.
In her later years, Joan found joy in supporting the vibrant arts community in and around Burlington, attending local theater productions, musical performances, and art exhibitions. Her unwavering support for the arts reflected her belief in the power of creativity to inspire and uplift individuals from all walks of life.
A Legacy of Love and Family
At the core of Joan’s life was her deep love for her family. Married to Theodore E. Braun, Jr. for over 60 years until his passing in 2021, Joan was a devoted mother to her three sons, Theodore III, Michael, and Stuart, and a cherished grandmother to Isabella, Daniel, Samuel, Lucas, and Grace. Her sisters, Margaret and Nancy, and her daughters-in-law, Lori, Sandra, and Colleen, were also a source of strength and support throughout her life.
