Rebuilding Vermont’s Workforce: Innovative Program Changing Lives
Last summer, 29-year-old Alex Reid faced a pivotal moment in his career journey. Despite working in tree service and as a FedEx driver post-college, he yearned for a more promising path. Eager to break into construction, an industry poised to offer 4,000+ jobs in Vermont, Reid found doors closed due to lack of experience.
When offered a chance at a Construction 101 training program by ReSOURCE, including a $500 stipend, Reid seized the opportunity. The program provided a comprehensive six-week overview of carpentry, followed by hands-on experience aiding in flood recovery efforts. His journey culminated in restoring the East Monitor Barn with Building Heritage, a historic preservation specialist.
Program Impact: Making Dreams a Reality
Serve Learn Earn, a collaborative effort by ReSOURCE, Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, Vermont Works for Women, and Audubon Vermont, has been transforming lives since its 2021 inception. This workforce development initiative has already empowered 1,400+ participants with essential skills in trades, conservation, and agriculture.
With annual support from the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation, the program recently secured a game-changing $1.8 million grant from Ascendium Education Group. This infusion will propel the program’s reach and impact, fostering greater economic growth.
Building a Brighter Future: Addressing Workforce Challenges
In an aging state facing workforce shortages, programs like Serve Learn Earn are vital for bridging the gap. With Governor Phil Scott’s $16 million investment in training and scholarship programs, Vermont is actively nurturing a skilled labor force to drive economic prosperity.
Alumni of the program, like Reid, are shining examples of success stories. Having collectively earned over $3.25 million in wages and secured 552 work credentials, these individuals are not only advancing their careers but also contributing significantly to Vermont’s economy.
Empowering Change: Diverse Opportunities for Growth
The collaborative efforts of the nonprofits behind Serve Learn Earn offer a wide array of opportunities for eager learners. From Audubon Vermont’s teen-focused programs to the conservation corps’ emphasis on outdoor projects, each organization brings a unique aspect to the table.
Exciting new programs, such as the timber framing pre-apprenticeship by the conservation corps and the heavy equipment training by ReSOURCE, are equipping individuals with specialized skills essential for Vermont’s growing industries.
With inspiring stories like Reid’s journey from curiosity to passion, Serve Learn Earn continues to pave the way for a brighter future, one skilled worker at a time. As participants find their footing in high-demand fields, Vermont’s workforce landscape is being reshaped for the better.
